How to Yap…for those overthinking it!

Yapping, for those who overthink it.
20 years as a professional speaker. This is my strategy:

  1. Immediately announce what you’re going to talk about.
  2. Then breathe.
  3. Then banter a little.
  4. Then get into the meat and potatoes.
  5. Don’t be afraid to give it away. Make room for more. People won’t remember everything, but they’ll remember the essence of you.
  6. Inspiration is the why. Implementation is where you make your money.
  7. The HOW is how you get paid.
  8. Build a solid intro for the replay, not the room.
  9. Say what you’re going to say. Say it. Say why. Say it again.
  10. Every few minutes, catch up the latecomers: “If you’re just joining me…”
  11. Don’t obsess over live numbers. The replay is the real audience.
  12. Clipping is where you win.
  13. Yapping requires a villain. Name the person, the system, the bad advice. A villain gives you a point of view, and a point of view gives you passion.
  14. Know who this is for and how it helps them.
  15. Pick a framework. Yours, someone else’s, or one you bought. Nobody talks about buying frameworks enough.
  16. You don’t need to be perfect, but you do need to prepare.
  17. Talk in sound bites.
  18. Have talking points. Have notes. It’s okay I promise
  19. You don’t always have to Jay-Z your way into everything off the dome.
  20. Bonus: give them a destination. A next step. A call to action.
